Embarking on a Volta River Boat Ride
Our 'River Boat' for the one hour ride The bridge is just downstream. |
From inside the boat 'Akwaaba' means welcome. |
Elder Markham sure looks happy. But who wouldn't be happy... |
...when starting a river cruise with such a beautiful companion as Sister Markham! |
The Volta River looks and feels like the Mississippi River. It is easy to imagine an African Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer adventure along this river. There is a dam just upstream of where we launched that produces much of the electricity for the Ghana power grid. The river empties into the Alantic Ocean at Ada. Along the river are countless fishing villages, some resort type hotels and a few nice estates. Even a short ride almost overwhelms the senses with postcard quality views on every side.
A resort hotel still under construction | A very nice estate home |
The people of the river villages were a real attraction for us. |
And, of course, eight obrunis in a boat was entertainment for them, too. |
Working, washing, bathing, playing |
The river gives the village life. |
Fish is the mainstay food and also provides a barter and cash commodity. |
The villagers grow most other food they eat. This is a corn field. |
The flame tree makes this village scene look like a postcard. |
As we rode by this village with no people at the river we wondered if we should stop and investigate. |
Remember the two story treehouse where Tarzan and Jane hung out? This tree could provide such lodging. |
The river banks are beautiful. No wonder Livingstone chose to get lost in Africa. |
Flowers | Birds |
Another river view with the bridge just showing on the right. |
This beautiful bridge links the the Volta Region to the rest of Ghana. |
